Pets on superyachts

If you’d like to bring your dog or other pet on a luxury charter, it’s essential to clarify this in advance. Pets are not generally permitted on a superyacht, but in some cases they may be allowed on request and only with prior authorisation. This way, you’ll know exactly where you stand before departure and avoid any surprises for yourself, your travelling companions and the crew.

At Global Yacht Charter, we are happy to assist you in tailoring your requirements to a crewed superyacht charter. As every yacht and every owner has their own rules, an early enquiry is the best way to ensure smooth planning.

Are pets allowed on a superyacht?

It is possible, but never a given. On a crewed superyacht, permission usually depends on the yacht’s owner, the route, the duration of the charter and practical feasibility on board.

For charters booked through Global Yacht Charter, pets are permitted only on request and with prior authorisation. Without this confirmation, you should assume that pets are not allowed on board.

What needs to be considered in advance?

Practical and operational factors play a key role in this assessment. These include the type of animal, its behaviour, the planned sailing route and the regulations in the ports or countries you are visiting.

  • Owner’s permission – the yacht owner decides whether pets are welcome
  • Route and destinations – local import regulations and port regulations may impose restrictions
  • Life on board – not every yacht is practically equipped to accommodate a pet
  • Comfort and safety on board – the animal must be able to stay safely and be kept under control whilst sailing and when moored
  • Protecting the interior – luxury finishes and soft furnishings often require additional rules

What rules do usually apply on board?

If a pet is permitted, additional conditions usually apply. These may vary from yacht to yacht, but certain basic principles are common to most.

  • Additional cleaning charges or a security deposit may apply
  • Access to indoor areas may be restricted
  • Upholstered furniture is not generally intended for pets
  • Advance notice is required so that permission and conditions can be confirmed in writing

This is particularly important on a superyacht. It’s all about high-quality interiors, top-class service and a carefully curated experience for all guests on board, including etiquette and rules of conduct for guests.

What should you arrange in advance?

If you wish to bring a pet, you should make sure to mention this straight away when you first make your enquiry. You can simply specify your charter preferences when you do so. Please do not wait until the booking is almost finalised to do this.

If bringing pets on board is a must, this should be taken into account right from the start when selecting the right yacht. Our guide to choosing the right charter yacht will help you assess the layout, outdoor spaces and access rules.

From a practical point of view, it is advisable to discuss at least the following in advance:

  • Which pet you’d like to bring with you
  • The size and number of animals
  • The planned route and sailing period
  • Any additional costs or deposits
  • Access rules for indoor areas and the deck

This allows us to assess in good time whether your requirements are compatible with the available superyachts and the planned trip. A packing list for a superyacht charter can also help to ensure you don’t overlook anything.

Is a superyacht always suitable for travelling with a pet?

No. A superyacht is a highly exclusive travel environment with a crew, refined finishes and a tightly organised service. As a result, not every yacht is automatically suitable for guests with pets. Sometimes it is possible under specific conditions; at other times, it is simply not a good fit with the yacht or the itinerary.

That is precisely why personalised advice is so valuable. When privacy, comfort and a bespoke experience are paramount, you’ll want to know in advance which options are realistic and what you’d be better off leaving behind when boarding a yacht.

Have your enquiry assessed

If you’d like to know whether pets are permitted on your chosen superyacht, please discuss your preferences with a specialist as early as possible. Global Yacht Charter can check, as part of a crewed charter enquiry, which yachts may accept pets on request and under what conditions. To help you prepare, please also use our checklist for planning a charter.

This way, you’ll set off with clear expectations and a charter that suits your travel plans, or a typical week on board.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my dog on a yacht?

This is sometimes possible, but only if it has been requested and approved in advance. On a superyacht, permission depends on the owner, the yacht and the route.

Are pets generally allowed on a superyacht?

No, you shouldn’t assume that this is included as standard. On luxury charters, prior authorisation and additional conditions usually apply.

Are there any additional charges for pets on board?

Yes, an additional cleaning charge or deposit may apply. The exact details vary depending on the yacht and will be agreed in advance.

Are pets allowed on board everywhere?

Usually not. It is common for pets to be barred from certain indoor areas and not allowed on soft furnishings, just as they are restricted from using water toys and jet skis on board.
