Mediterranean: when and what to expect
Pre-season May - June
The days are long, the water warms up and coastal towns come alive without summer crowds. Temperatures often move between 22-28°C. This is ideal for those who like to dock in charming harbours with easier access to top restaurants and beach clubs. Winds are usually moderate, with fine conditions for comfortable cruising and longer lunch stops in bays. Popular choices are the Côte d'Azur and Balearic Islands for lifestyle and design, or the Dalmatian coast for quieter anchorages and UNESCO cities. High season July - August
The classic yacht charter high season with warm weather, lively ports and full event calendars. Count on 28-32°C, crystal-clear waters and lively evenings. In parts of Greece, the Meltemi can lead to strong easterly winds, affecting your choice of route. In Croatia and along the Italian coast, local winds or a Mistral or Bora episode can make for sportier sailing. This is the time for iconic anchorages at St-Tropez, Porto Cervo and Capri, or island hopping around Mykonos, Paros and Milos. Fancy a Med variation? Check out our sample trip Corsica & Sardinia. Berths in prestigious ports are scarce, so your itinerary will be timely and meticulously planned by our charter planner and captain. Read: when to book your summer charter.
Autumn September - October
The sea water is still warm, temperatures drop to a pleasant 22-28°C and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed. You benefit from more calm in bays and better availability in popular ports. This makes culturally rich itineraries attractive, such as Sicily and the Amalfi Coast, or a culinary exploration of the Balearic Islands. Wind patterns are often friendly; short fronts can pass more quickly, so flexible planning remains important. For lovers of wine, gastronomy and bright lights, this is a favourite season.
Caribbean: winter sun on the water
High season December - February
Tropically warm with 26-30°C and steady trade winds from east to northeast. This is the classic for those looking to escape the European winter. Expect lively atmospheres around Christmas and New Year in St Barths and St Martin, stylish beach clubs and crystal-clear anchor bays. The British Virgin Islands are loved for their short distances, excellent shelter and relaxed vibe, ideal for families and mixed-ability groups. Late season March - April
The weather remains outstanding but the crowds decrease. This is an excellent period for diving and snorkelling off the Grenadines or a quiet exploration of Antigua and Barbuda. With stable winds and often calmer anchorages, this is a wonderful time for longer passages between islands and dinners on deck with fresh catch provided by your private chef. About hurricane season and shoulder months
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. The core season for Caribbean charters is therefore December to April. Outside these months, many yachts shift to the Mediterranean or other areas. If you do want to sail in May or June, we recommend careful tailoring and up-to-date weather monitoring in consultation with your captain and our planners.
How to choose the right season for your yacht charter
- Weather and sea conditions: do you prefer calm and warm, or sportier sailing with a bit more wind
- Crowds and atmosphere: are you looking for bustling hotspots, or rather serene bays and spontaneous landings
- Experiences: from beach clubs and designer boutiques to UNESCO cities, wineries and nature parks
- Trip duration and distances: Caribbean offers short layovers, Mediterranean combines longer day trips with urban stops
- Special occasions: think Cannes in May, Monaco GP, or New Year's Eve in St Barths
Availability, fleet and on-board experience
Luxury superyachts position seasonally: summers in the Mediterranean, winters in the Caribbean. As a result, the choice is greatest in each core season. Your stay is in spacious suites, with custom-made menus by your private chef and a crew coordinating activities like diving, e-foiling and tender excursions. In windy weeks, the captain can suggest alternative bays or night harbours for maximum comfort. Suites are sometimes called cabins or staterooms.
Prices and booking windows per season
The charter price is seasonal: a fixed price in low season and a fixed price in high season. The time of booking does not influence the charter price. In popular weeks, availability determines whether your preferred yacht and berths are still available, especially around festivals and holidays. Indicative weekly rates at Global Yacht Charter, excluding VAT and APA:
- Queen Martina 27 m - 8 guests - 4 crew - from €85,000 per week, excluding VAT and APA
- Premura 38 m - 10 guests - 7 crew - from €165,000 per week, excluding VAT and APA
- Reliance 55 m - 12 guests - 13 crew - from €375,000 per week, excluding VAT and APA
For a seamless arrival and departure, our sister company Global Aviation can coordinate your private jet trip, matching embarkation times and the planned sailing schedule.
Frequently asked questions
What is the charter season for yachts?
Globally, yachts follow the sun. In Europe, the charter season in the Mediterranean falls roughly from May to October, peaking in July and August. In the Caribbean, the peak runs from December to April. Outside these windows, many yachts move to other regions or undergo maintenance.
What are the best months for sailing in the Caribbean?
December to April offers the most stable weather, with trade winds of around 12-20 knots and temperatures around 26-30°C. Around Christmas and New Year it is livelier, while March and April are quieter with still excellent conditions for island hopping, snorkelling and diving.
How long is the average sailing season?
In the Mediterranean, the practical season lasts around 6 months, from May to October. In the Caribbean, about 5 months, from December to April. Within those windows, there are shoulder months with more calm and peak months with maximum liveliness and events.
How much does it cost to charter a yacht?
The price depends on yacht length, year of construction, crew level and season. At Global Yacht Charter, weekly rates start around €85,000 excluding VAT and APA for 24-30 meters. Larger superyachts run to several hundred thousand euros per week. The charter price is seasonal and does not depend on the time of booking.
Is September better than July in the Mediterranean?
It depends on your preference. July offers bustling hotspots and a summer vibe, but also more crowds. September is often quieter, the seawater is still warm and mooring spots are more readily available. For culinary and cultural itineraries, many guests prefer September.
